Tokay Gecko

A minimum 20x20x30" (or larger) vertical, arboreal enclosure is ideal for a single adult tokay gecko. Height is more important than floor space as these geckos are strongly arboreal and will spend most of their time in the upper third of the enclosure. Front-opening enclosures are much safer for interaction with this defensive species.

Provide plenty of cork bark rounds, sturdy branches, and dense live or artificial plants. Tokay geckos feel most secure in heavily cluttered environments where they can press against bark and disappear into vegetation. A sparse enclosure creates a chronically stressed gecko.

Maintain daytime temperatures of 82 to 88 degrees F with a basking area, dropping to 72 to 78 degrees F at night. Humidity should stay at 60 to 80%, achieved through evening misting and a live plant presence. An automatic misting system on a timer set for morning and evening is the most reliable approach. Low-output UVB is beneficial for overall health.

Tokay geckos are carnivorous insectivores. Offer appropriately sized live insects: dubia roaches, crickets, mealworms, and superworms. Adults can occasionally take small pinky mice or waxworms as very occasional treats. Feed juveniles daily, adults every 2 to 3 days. Prey should be no larger than the space between the gecko's eyes.

Gut-load all feeder insects 24 to 48 hours before offering - the gecko's nutritional quality depends entirely on what its prey was eating. Dust with calcium w/D3 2 to 3 times per week and a reptile multivitamin once weekly. Always have fresh, dechlorinated water available in a shallow dish.

Tokay geckos tend to eat aggressively when conditions are correct. A gecko that consistently refuses food may be in pre-shed, too cold, or experiencing illness - assess husbandry parameters before assuming a medical problem.

Dense cork bark arrangements, branching at multiple levels, and live or high-quality artificial plants create a stimulating and security-providing environment. Tokay geckos are primarily display animals - their vivid spotted coloration, dramatic size, and famous vocalizations are the primary appeal.

The "tokay" call - a loud, two-syllable bark used by males to defend territory and attract mates - is one of the most distinctive sounds in the reptile hobby. Housing a tokay gecko where you can see and hear them during their evening activity period is genuinely entertaining. Their color-shifting in response to mood changes and the visual hunting behavior they display during prey pursuit are fascinating to observe.

Tokay geckos can become calmer over time with consistent, patient handling. Approach slowly and always from below and in front - never from above, which mimics a predator. Some individuals remain defensive throughout their lives. Respect individual temperament. Forced handling of an unwilling tokay increases aggression and stress.

New tokay geckos are often significantly defensive and will bite hard - their jaws are powerful and they hold on. Wear leather gloves during initial handling sessions. A bite will usually release when the gecko is lowered toward the ground (they release prey instinctively when it "lands"). Never jerk your hand away as this causes lacerations.

Watch for retained shed (especially around toes and eye caps), respiratory infections from low temperatures or humidity swings, and internal parasites in wild-caught animals. Wild-caught tokay geckos frequently carry heavy parasite loads and should receive a fecal exam from a reptile vet promptly after acquisition.

Only purchase captive-bred individuals from reputable breeders whenever possible. Wild-caught animals experience significant stress from capture and transport and require extra time to settle. Annual wellness checks with a reptile-savvy veterinarian are recommended.
