- Enclosure

- Temperature

- Humidity and substrate

- Insects when young, then pre-killed rodents for protein, never live. Vegetables at every stage and more fruit with age: an all-rodent adult diet is the obesity on the emergency card. Lean meat, fish, and eggs as occasional treats.Setup guide →

- Never from your hand
- A hungry tegu does not distinguish a finger from food. A bowl, tongs, a puzzle feeder, or a separate feeding container, which teaches it the enclosure is not where food appears.Setup guide →
- Handling, the honest version
- The dog-like temperament is earned through regular supervised handling and free-roam time. Approach from the side, never from above, and never disturb one in its hide. Unlike a monitor, a tegu can drop its tail, and two males fight.Handling guide →
- Two handlers
- The rule is one handler per 3 to 4 feet of lizard, and a full-grown Argentine is past it: two people for any job that needs it held still.Handling guide →
- Brumation

- Weakness, swollen joints or legs, tremors, or soft or fractured bones
- Nasal discharge or open-mouth breathing
- Any tissue protruding from the vent
Book a vet visit promptly for these.
- Lethargy and appetite loss outside the 2 to 4 month brumation window from mid-September, when both are normal
- Weight loss, diarrhea, and skin issues in an imported or wild-caught animal: a fecal exam and treatment
- A rounded, heavy body: obesity is common here, and a vet body-condition check settles the diet
An adult tegu's size makes emergency transport difficult, so find a reptile vet before you need one.

What size enclosure does an Argentine tegu need?
An adult male needs 8 by 4 by 4 feet at minimum; females need somewhat less, though still substantial space. Experienced keepers often go to 10 by 5 by 5 or a dedicated reptile room. A hatchling can start near 40 gallons, but expect to rehouse it within the first year.
Is it legal to buy an Argentine tegu as a pet?
In most states, yes, tegus aren't federally injurious and most state wildlife codes don't mention them at all. Florida is the major exception: since April 29, 2021, new acquisition of a pet tegu has been banned outright under the state's Prohibited species list.
Should I plan the enclosure around brumation?
Yes. Tegus slow down, eat less, and burrow for 2 to 4 months in cooler seasons, indoors included. That is normal for the species, so give the substrate enough depth to support a long burrow instead of trying to prevent it.
