🌍 Overview
The Russian tortoise (also called Horsfield's tortoise) is a compact, hardy species native to the arid steppes and rocky desert from Kazakhstan to Pakistan and China. They are one of the world's most cold-tolerant tortoises, surviving extreme temperature swings by hibernating deep underground for months at a time. Among the smallest and hardiest of the commonly kept tortoise species, they have been popular pets for decades.
