- Cage type
- A wire cage with a solid sealed base, never a glass tank. A tank traps the ammonia that drives the respiratory disease rats are prone to.Setup guide →
- Cage size
- 24x24x24 inches is the minimum for a single rat, and you are keeping at least two, so it is a starting point. Cages built for ferrets or chinchillas are usually the right size.Setup guide →
- Bar spacing
- About half an inch or less. At three-quarters of an inch an adult can get its head stuck.Setup guide →
- Temperature
- 66 to 73°F ideal, fine across 64 to 79°F. They cannot sweat or pant, and heat stress becomes a real risk above about 86°F.Setup guide →
- Bedding
- Paper or cellulose, changed at least twice a week so ammonia does not build. No sawdust, cedar, or pine.Setup guide →
- Wheel
- Solid-surface, at least 12 inches and ideally 14 to 16 for adults, especially males. A small wheel forces an arched spine.Setup guide →
- Company

- Enrichment

- Staple diet
- A rat-specific pellet or lab block, never pellets made for rabbits, guinea pigs, or hamsters. Vegetables, fruit, grains, and seeds combined under about 10% of the diet.Feeding guide →
- Portions and water
- Twice daily, morning and evening, adjusted so a rat finishes what is offered. Water from bottles, more than one per cage.Feeding guide →
- Foods to avoid
- Onion, citrus, walnuts, rhubarb, grapes, raisins, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, raw beans, unripe tomato, green or raw potato, and anything salty or sugary.Feeding guide →
- Handling
- Both hands scooping, one under the chest and one under the hindquarters, held close. Never by the tail: the skin shears away. A few days to settle first, and rats are the pocket pet least likely to bite.Handling guide →
- Respiratory disease
- Labored or noisy breathing, sneezing, a rough coat, and red-brown staining at the eyes and nose. 95% of pet ratteries carry the bacterium, there is no cure, and the chronic form rarely allows more than 2 years.Health guide →
- Lumps
- Mammary tumors are the commonest, in both sexes, because the tissue runs from chin to tail. Any new lump is a vet visit; spaying a female before 7 months lowers her risk.Health guide →
- Budget
- Roughly $250 to $550 for a properly housed pair, the cage $130 to $360 of it. About $20 to $40 a month, and $60 to $110 for a routine exotic-vet exam, per rat.Cost guide →
