Persian: Breed Quirks

Persians are calm, quiet, and well-suited to peaceful indoor environments. They are not athletic or demanding of exercise. They prefer to stay low (they do not typically climb or jump as much as other breeds). Their long, dense coat mats easily and requires daily grooming. Keep them away from humid environments which can cause skin fold dermatitis.

Feed a complete, balanced wet and dry food. Flat-faced Persians may have difficulty picking up and chewing standard dry kibble shapes: flat or small kibble designed for brachycephalic cats is available. Wet food is important for hydration. Monitor weight as Persians are relatively inactive.

Persians are low-energy cats satisfied with gentle daily play, window views, and lap time. They are not demanding of intense activity. A calm, stable environment suits them well. They can be shy with strangers. Provide soft, elevated resting spots (they enjoy plush surfaces).

Significant breed-specific concerns driven by extreme brachycephaly: brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS, breathing difficulty), dental overcrowding, chronic eye discharge (epiphora) from facial fold pressure on tear ducts, skin fold dermatitis, and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). PKD DNA testing is available and all responsible breeders screen for it. Traditional or 'doll-face' Persians have far fewer health issues than extreme-type Persians. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) also occurs in the breed.
