German Shepherd: Breed Quirks

German Shepherds need space and activity: they are not well-suited to small apartments without major exercise commitment. They bond intensely with their family and can develop separation anxiety. Crate training from puppyhood helps prevent anxiety. Their double coat requires regular brushing to manage heavy shedding.

Feed a large breed adult food with high-quality protein. GSDs can be prone to food allergies and sensitivities: common triggers include chicken and wheat. If your GSD has chronic loose stools, skin issues, or ear infections, consider a food trial with a novel protein. Joint supplements are beneficial for older dogs.

GSDs are working dogs that need a job. Without adequate mental and physical stimulation, they become destructive, anxious, and reactive. They need 90 minutes or more of vigorous exercise daily, plus daily training sessions. Scent work, protection sports, agility, obedience, and herding are excellent outlets. Socialization from puppyhood is critical: undersocialized GSDs are a significant bite risk.

Degenerative myelopathy (DM): a serious progressive neurological disease that causes gradual hind-end paralysis, similar to ALS in humans. DNA testing can identify carriers. Hip and elbow dysplasia are extremely common in the breed: always get OFA health clearances from breeders. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), bloat, and perianal fistulas are other notable concerns.
