🌍 Overview
The Madagascar hissing cockroach is one of the largest cockroach species in the world and the only known hissing insect that produces sound through modified spiracles (breathing pores) rather than wing rubbing. Endemic to Madagascar, they are detritivores that play an important ecological role in forest decomposition. Males display prominent pronotal horns used in shoving contests with rival males. In captivity they are odorless, wingless, and remarkably robust.
