Medium Breed Dogs

Medium breeds (20 to 60 lbs) adapt well to most living situations given adequate exercise. They can thrive in apartments with 2 or more dedicated walks per day. Provide a dog bed or crate that allows them to fully stretch out. Medium dogs are often very social and do not do well isolated for 8 or more hours daily: consider doggy daycare or a midday walk if you work long hours.

Feed a complete, AAFCO-approved food formulated for medium breeds or adult dogs. Portion control matters: medium dogs are prone to obesity, especially after spaying or neutering. Use a measuring cup, not a scoop guess. Avoid free-feeding (leaving food out all day). Feed twice daily for adult dogs. High-quality protein sources should lead the ingredient list.

Most medium breeds were bred for active work: herding, hunting, retrieving, or guarding. They need 45 to 90 minutes of exercise per day depending on breed energy levels, plus mental enrichment daily. Fetch, swimming, nose work, agility, and obedience training are all excellent. Lack of exercise and enrichment is the leading cause of destructive behavior in medium breeds.

Hip and elbow dysplasia affect many medium breeds, especially those with a genetic predisposition (Labs, Goldens, Border Collies). Maintain a healthy weight to protect joints. Bloat (GDV) risk is lower than in giant breeds but still possible in deep-chested medium breeds like Standard Poodles and Border Collies. Annual wellness checks, dental care, and preventive medications are standard.
