Border Collie: Breed Quirks

Border Collies are absolutely not suitable for low-activity households or apartments without extremely high exercise commitment. They were bred to run all day herding sheep, making 2 to 3 miles of daily walking woefully insufficient. They need running, off-leash exercise, and mental challenges daily. Bored Border Collies become obsessive, destructive, and neurotic.

Feed a high-quality adult or active breed formula. Working dogs or highly active sport dogs may need performance diets. Maintain a healthy weight: they should look lean and athletic, not chunky. Energy needs are very high in active dogs and should be matched to actual activity level.

This is the defining concern for Border Collie ownership. They need 2 to 3 hours of vigorous exercise daily (running, herding, agility, disc sports, hiking) plus 30 to 60 minutes of active training. Herding, agility, frisbee, flyball, and advanced obedience are excellent outlets. Without this level of stimulation, Border Collies develop compulsive behaviors (chasing lights, shadows, obsessive ball-chasing), anxiety, and destructive habits.

Overall a healthy breed when bred responsibly. Key concerns: Collie eye anomaly (CEA, a genetic eye condition), hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and MDR1 gene mutation (which causes severe reactions to several common drugs including ivermectin-based dewormers). DNA test all Border Collies for MDR1 and inform every vet. Deafness and vision problems are also seen, especially in merle dogs.
