Seeing the World in 16 Colors (Yes, Really)

Humans have three types of photoreceptors in their eyes, which let us see the full rainbow of colors we know and love. Mantis shrimp have 16. Sixteen. That's not a typo.
Their compound eyes are mounted on independent stalks, meaning each eye can move on its own. Each eye is divided into three regions, giving them trinocular vision in a single eye. They can perceive ultraviolet light, infrared light, and polarized light, which is light that vibrates in a specific direction and is invisible to us entirely.
Here's the twist though: scientists have found that mantis shrimp are actually not great at distinguishing between similar colors the way humans are. Instead of processing color in the brain like we do, they seem to use their photoreceptors more like a barcode scanner, quickly identifying specific wavelengths rather than comparing them. It's a completely different approach to vision, and researchers are still working to fully understand it.
What we do know is that their ability to see polarized light is almost unique in the animal kingdom, and it likely helps them communicate with each other and spot prey that would be invisible to other predators. Their eyes are, without question, among the most complex visual systems ever evolved.

The Punch That Breaks Glass
Mantis shrimp are famous for their strike, and for good reason. The smasher variety (more on the two types in a moment) can throw a punch at around 23 meters per second, making it one of the fastest strikes in the entire animal kingdom. The force behind that blow can reach up to 1,500 Newtons. To put that in perspective, that's roughly the equivalent of a 150-kilogram weight landing on a single point.
But here's where it gets even wilder. The strike is so fast that it creates cavitation bubbles in the water. When the club moves through the water at that speed, it creates a low-pressure zone that causes the water to briefly vaporize, forming tiny bubbles. When those bubbles collapse, they release a shockwave and a flash of light and heat. So even if the initial punch misses, the collapsing cavitation bubble can still stun or kill prey. The mantis shrimp essentially punches twice with one swing.
This is why mantis shrimp have earned the nickname "thumb splitters" among fishermen. Handle one carelessly and you'll find out very quickly why that name stuck. They've also been known to crack aquarium glass from the inside, which makes them a challenging (and expensive) pet for the unprepared.

Smashers vs. Spearers: Two Very Different Weapons
Not all mantis shrimp are built the same. There are over 450 known species, and they broadly fall into two categories based on how they hunt: smashers and spearers.
Smashers have club-like appendages called dactyl clubs. These are the glass-breakers, the shell-crackers, the ones fishermen fear. They go after hard-shelled prey like crabs, snails, and clams, using their clubs to bludgeon through the shell and get to the soft meal inside. The dactyl club itself is a marvel of engineering, built from a helicoidal fiber structure that distributes impact stress and prevents the club from shattering under its own force.
Spearers take a different approach. Their appendages end in sharp, barbed points rather than clubs. They prefer soft-bodied prey like fish and shrimp, which they impale with a lightning-fast stabbing motion. Spearers tend to be ambush hunters, lurking in burrows and waiting for something tasty to swim past before striking.
Both types are highly effective predators, and both are capable of causing serious injury to a human finger. The lesson: admire from a safe distance.
Dressed to Impress: Those Incredible Colors
Mantis shrimp are not subtle. Many species are decked out in some of the most vivid, eye-popping colors in the ocean, with bodies that look like they were painted by someone who had access to every color in the box and decided to use all of them at once.
These colors aren't just for show (well, not entirely). Because mantis shrimp can see polarized light, they can communicate using patterns that are completely invisible to most other animals. Their bodies reflect polarized light in specific ways, essentially giving them a private communication channel. They use this to signal to potential mates, warn rivals, and possibly even coordinate with their own species in ways we're still figuring out.
The peacock mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) is probably the most famous example, with a body that looks like a living piece of abstract art. Bright greens, blues, reds, and oranges all coexist in one compact, punchy package. It's genuinely one of the most beautiful animals in the ocean.

Love That Lasts: Mating for Life
Here's the part that surprises most people: some mantis shrimp species are monogamous and mate for life. In a world where most crustaceans are not exactly known for their romantic commitment, this is genuinely remarkable.
Pairs will share a burrow, cooperate in raising their young, and stay together for years. Courtship involves elaborate displays where the shrimp show off their vivid colors and fluorescent patterns under UV light. Given that they can see UV light and we can't, these displays are probably far more spectacular than anything we can observe with the naked eye.
The female carries the eggs and both parents may guard them until they hatch. It's a level of parental investment and pair bonding that you really don't expect from an animal that also punches through crab shells for breakfast.
How They Hunt: Ambush Artists of the Reef
Mantis shrimp are solitary, territorial, and highly effective ambush predators. Most species dig or occupy burrows in sandy or rocky substrate, and they spend a lot of their time lurking just inside the entrance, watching for prey with those extraordinary eyes.
When something edible comes within range, the strike happens in milliseconds. There's no chase, no prolonged struggle. It's just: wait, watch, strike. The prey rarely has time to react. Their burrows also serve as shelter from their own predators, and they'll defend them aggressively against rivals of their own species.
They're not social animals. Two mantis shrimp in the same territory will fight, and those fights can be brutal. They sometimes engage in ritualized combat where they take turns striking each other's tail shields (called telsons), which are reinforced to absorb blows. It's essentially a boxing match with rules, which is both impressive and a little absurd.

If you're not already obsessed with mantis shrimp, here are a few more reasons to be:
- Engineers are studying their clubs. The helicoidal fiber structure of the dactyl club is so good at absorbing impact without breaking that researchers are using it as a model for next-generation impact-resistant materials, including helmets, body armor, and aerospace components.
- They can see UV and polarized light. This gives them a view of the world that is genuinely beyond human comprehension. Coral reefs, which look beautiful to us, probably look absolutely otherworldly to a mantis shrimp.
- Fishermen call them thumb splitters. This nickname comes from the very real danger of reaching into a net or trap and accidentally grabbing one. The result is not pleasant. Professional fishermen who work in areas where mantis shrimp are common treat them with considerable respect.
- They're ancient. Mantis shrimp (order Stomatopoda) have been around for about 400 million years. They predate the dinosaurs by a wide margin and have been quietly perfecting their punch ever since.
- They're not actually shrimp. Despite the name, mantis shrimp are not true shrimp. They belong to their own order, Stomatopoda, and are more distantly related to crabs and lobsters than they are to the shrimp you'd find in a cocktail.
The Ocean's Most Underrated Superstar
Mantis shrimp pack more biological superlatives into a small body than almost any other creature on Earth. They have the most complex eyes ever studied, one of the fastest and most powerful strikes in the animal kingdom, a structural design that engineers are actively trying to copy, and a love life that puts most animals to shame.
They're a reminder that the ocean is full of creatures that are stranger, more capable, and more interesting than anything we could dream up. Next time you're near a reef, keep an eye out for a flash of color darting into a burrow. It might just be one of the most remarkable animals you'll ever almost see.
